Get Involved
"Deeds, not words," was the motto of Alice Paul, American suffragist and activist who helped women achieve the national right to vote. Efforts in all shapes and sizes are needed to help educate our state about the benefits of the midwifery model of care. Many active Nebraska Friends of Midwives (NFOM) members and participants are students and/or moms and dads with young children. Indeed, check out the board! When all we who care about increasing Nebraska's midwifery access and options contribute what we are able, it adds up nicely. Here are some ways you can help!
- Starting Small
- Become a “Friend.” Joining Nebraska Friends of Midwives is free. You will receive email updates and newsletters.
- Like us on Facebook!
- Receive announcements through Yahoo.
- Place a birth announcement in the newspaper. Announce your home birth or midwife-attended hospital birth. Let Nebraskans know that midwives are catching babies!
- Share your birth story or birth photos on our website.
- Tell your friends and family about this group. Put a link to our website in the signature line of your emails or posts to online bulletin boards.
- Purchase items from the vendors we have affiliated with. A portion of your purchase will go to Nebraska Friends of Midwives!
- Write letters to the editor when newspapers publish articles related to birth or midwifery.
- Attend regional meetings and events, like cookie days.
- Collect Terracycle items for NFOM's fundraising efforts!
- Getting Bigger
- Join Nebraska Friends of Midwives at a "General", “Supporting”, or “Sustaining” level (and receive cool gifts!)
- Volunteer to help on a committee (or two!) - we have legislative, educational, events and fundraising committees. Events and fundraising have space for more help!
- Write birth and midwifery related articles for our blog and/or newsletter.
- Pretty Big
- Join Nebraska Friends of Midwives at a “Benefactor” level.
- Volunteer to coordinate a regional group. NFOM has seven regions: Omaha, Norfolk, Lincoln,Tri-City, North Central, Southwestern, and the Panhandle. Regional groups can simply get together for social and networking functions or they can engage in bigger projects such as educational or fundraising efforts. Five of the regions have directors; North Central and Southwestern are still in need. Click here for more information.
- Donate your talents or services for an NFOM event or on-going effort. (Photography, printing, graphic design... whatever you've got!)
- Donate your venue for use at an NFOM event, such as a film showing.
- Consider a board position
If you are pretty certain that you can contribute something or you have an idea you think is worth sharing, please contact NFOM.
