Terracycle, Film Showings, and other Fundraising Efforts

Terracycle- Click HERE to print a list!

Okay- maybe YOU don't use toothpaste, a toothbrush, tape, shampoo, pens, mascara, toilet paper, or paper towels, or eat tortillas, yogurt, chips, cereal, crackers, cheese, energy bars, candy, Kashi, or packaged cookies- but there is a 100% chance that you know someone who does. Why is this important? Because NFOM earns money by donating these and other difficult-to-recycle products or their packaging to Terracycle (TC).

Maybe you have seen TC products such as backpacks, pencil pouches, belts, and other accessories in the fall when school starts. Those products are created by TC using factory seconds, which would have otherwise been trashed, donated by manufacturing companies.  TC recycles post-consumer waste (including the items donated by NFOM) into plastic products including flower pots, seating, paving stones, bike racks, park benches, garbage and recycling cans, and much more. It is so easy to make a third (or fourth?) container next to your trash, recycling (and compost?) labeled TC for NFOM.

To keep up with this ongoing fundraising project, NFOM has several different brigades collecting and mailing various materials to TC; NFOM earns, on average, two cents per item. This may seem hardly worth the hassle, but It all adds up!  After a slow start, followed by a quickly growing  effort, NFOM has earned $784.00 through TC, and has helped give new life to materials that would otherwise be taking up space in a landfill.

Project participants often include extended family, neighbors, and friends (who may not know much about NFOM) who feel good about the opportunity to prevent waste. It is simple to start collecting ONE item- like chip bags or toilet paper packaging, in order to get into the habit of "Terracycling". Once it becomes automatic, it is fun to add more, and to see how much stuff is going someplace other than a landfill.

The great thing about the TC project is that is it is so easy. Sorted items (candy wrappers can be smushed into a bigger candy wrapper, chip bags go inside one large chip bag) can be donated to your local TC brigade- and the brigade leader will take care of the rest.  Individuals are not responsible for mailing their own materials-  brigade leaders complete the sorting and shipping process. ANYONE can participate in this effort- just contact April Segura for more information. Easy peasy!

Photo at right: Omaha NFOM supporters brought their TC collections to the monthly meeting to hand off to the Omaha brigade leader. Those who collect TC materials do so much like they recycle, storing packaging in bags or boxes in their mudrooms, garages, or on their porches or decks.

Film Showings

Picture
Laboring Under an Illusion is available for public and private residence film showings in all regions of Nebraska.  From the film's website:

"Anthropologist Vicki Elson explores media-generated myths about childbirth. As a childbirth educator for 25 years, she observes daily how our culture affects our birth experiences. In this film, she contrasts fiction with reality. The result is hilarious, engaging, and enlightening."

Laboring Under an Illusion film showings can be used as an effective fundraiser and educational tool.  To find out more about scheduling a film showing in your area, please contact Rachel Howell.

NFOM merchandise

NFOM has totes and t-shirts available! Great conversation starters, both are 100% cotton, and are on-going reminders of the "Where's My Midwife" event that was held October of 2010 at Omaha's Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge event highlighted the differences in midwifery laws that exist on the two sides of the river. In Iowa childbirth can be legally attended by licensed midwives in hospitals, in birth centers, and in homes. In Nebraska women are afforded licensed midwives only a hospital location, and only in a few hospitals. The state border served as a symbol of the distinct differences in and divisions between availability of care options. NFOM gear is often available at monthly meetings and other events.
